QUESTIONS (choose 1):
(1) Chomsky and Herman describe five filters through which the media is regulated. Do all five of these filters apply to journalistic blogs on-line (a.k.a. the blogosphere) in the same way that they apply to newspaper journalism?
(2) Chomsky and Herman indicate that the fifth filter is “anti-communism.” Has “anti-terrorism” replaced “anti-communism” in the past 20 years? Why or why not? In what ways is “anti-terrorism” different than “anti-communism”?
(3) Is Habermas’s notion of the Public Sphere better thought of as a practical tool, or a theoretical ideal? If it ought to be seen as a practical tool, how might it be realized in practice? If it ought to be seen as theoretical ideal, what are the greatest hurdles to trying to realize or approach it in the real world?
